Two Islanders – Andrew Brownlee and Louise Taylor – are yomping East Falkland to raise money for a team of specialists from Clinica Alemana to send the Head of their Mammography Department, Dr Horvath, a specialist nurse and a technician as well as a portable mammography machine and sonogram unit for a two week period.  It is estimated that 150 patients could be seen during this period.

According to Andy Brownlee, the project’s brainchild, thus far £6,100.00 has been raised but an estimated £40,000.00 is needed to fund the team from Chile.

Breast Cancer is one of the leading killers of women in the United Kingdom.  In the Falklands it is also a cause of concern with several women a year going to the UK for mammograms.

The KEMH doesn’t have a mammography unit and it is thought that one could be in place if it could be added to the Health and Medical Services budget.  Some estimates are cost effective at approximately £30,000.00 but others are touting a figure closer to £100,000 for such a unit.  Regardless of the price, one is needed and it is thought that sending women away to have the mammography done could, over time, be more expensive.
