Falklands : Rural Development Strategy Discussed at Chamber of Commerce

Members of the Public have attended a meeting to discuss the Rural Development Strategy of the Falklands.
RURAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY DISCUSSED AT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Members of the public have attended a meeting to discuss the Rural Development Strategy at 1800hrs on Tuesday, 05 August 2008. Members of the Rural Strategy Development Group consisting of key stakeholders from Government and business attended the meeting to discuss the development of a rural strategy for the Falkland Islands.
“I am really keen to get as many people involved in the Rural Development Strategy as possible,” said Pippa Christie, a member of FIG’s Policy Unit. She had invited people to attend the meeting, which looked at Rural development in a number of ways that would strengthen the economy in Camp. In the same interview Mrs Christie expressed a desire to have members of the Camp community work closely to be a point of contact for people in Camp who cannot attend Rural Development Strategy meetings.
Tuesday’s meeting also focused on improving access to goods and services both ways. This means well maintained roads, for example. Better roads and air access would help to enhance the quality of life for those living in Camp.
Falklands’ heritage centres around Camp and traditionally the wool industry. A portion of the Rural Development Strategy would ensure that Camp continues to be central to the Falklands’ culture and heritage. One example that FINN hopes will be included is the museum at North Arm and its continuing progress.
It is hoped that the Rural Development Strategy Group will make a strong case for future investment in Camp and guide that investment where it is most needed. People are needed to help contribute expertise in this area especially as investment will benefit Camp and the Falklands as well.
