FALKLANDS PUBLIC MEETING BY WAY OF EXPLANATION

By J. Brock (FINN)

At Tuesday’s public meeting Mr Roger Spink gave out some figures relative to discretionary spending.  While FINN’s report was accurate as far as it went, it was felt necessary to publish the full list of figures that Mr Spink quoted.  They are as follows:

1)      The funding of the Dairy from Jan 2006 to 30/6/2008 (excluding the purchase) has been £513,698 equivalent to what 2% MSL on employees will raise in a year.

For a man earning £15000 that is £300 in a year!
2)      The abattoir subsidy approx £500,000 per annum as above that is equivalent to the money raised by 2% MSL on every employee in the Falklands
3)      The upgrade of the road to New Haven is £450,000 as above!

4)      The ferry subsidy is around £1.2 to £1.4million per year equivalent to 6% MSL!

5)      The wool company has had approx £250,000 that is equivalent to 1% MSL or £150 from a man earning £15,000 per annum!

Which areas are cut is obviously a decision for councillors there are many others to choose!
There is merit in what Mr Spink said last night in that when things are tight the discretionary budget should be used for core expenditure and not as subsidies for businesses that may not mature for years to come.
