LOW KEY COMMEMORATIONS MARK 26TH LIBERATION ANNIVERSARY IN THE FALKLANDS

By J. Brock (FINN)

Commemorations to mark the 26th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands from Argentinean occupation have been held in Stanley on Saturday, 14 June 2008.

The day began with a thanksgiving service in Christ Church Cathedral beginning at 9.45 am with His Excellency the Governor Mr Alan Huckle, Commander British Forces, Members of the Legislative Council and representatives of the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Air Force, the Falkland Islands Defence Force and members of the Merchant Navy and Youth Groups in attendance.  Veterans from 1982, including local residents and a small contingent from the United Kingdom also attended the service.

At 11.00 am a wreath laying ceremony was held at the Liberation Monument in front of the Secretariat building.  After prayers His Excellency the Governor laid a wreath, with a Member of Legislative Council, the Commander British Forces, representatives of the Armed Services, Veterans’ associations, and by relatives and others taking their turn.

A civic reception, hosted by the Falkland Islands Government, was held in the Town Hall from 11.30 for residents and members of the Armed Services.  During the afternoon and evening there were several more intimate events to remember the liberation in 1982.

On Monday, 16 June 2008 HMS Liverpool held an open day so that the community could have a sample of life on a warship.  Visitors had a chance to look around the ship from 1000 to 1500hrs.
