MAY BALL 2008 REPORT
By J. Brock (FINN)
The 2008 May Ball was held in the Town Hall on Friday, 23 May 2008. Miss Robyn Berntsen was chosen May Queen with Varity Livermore taking May Princess. Prince Charming was Dan Cofre and his runner-up was David Phillips.
Miss Berntsen wore a scarlet floor-length gown with spaghetti straps and a chiffon shawl. Miss Livermore wore a plum coloured floor length gown with spaghetti straps. Prince Charming AKA Dan Cofre wore a charcoal grey suit with a maroon shirt and Safron coloured tie. David Phillips dressed in a dark brown suit with a wedge-wood blue shirt with a wedge-wood blue tie accentuated with a midnight blue stripe.
Tiaras, flowers and presents were given to the winners by H. E. the Governor Mr. Alan Huckle. In all, there were 23 entrants for May Queen and 20 entrants for Prince Charming.
British participation in the International Polar Year was the theme of the ball, with cut-outs of the James Clark Ross and an artificial ice-berg and stuffed penguins helping to decorate the stage. First day covers from South Georgia were on sale at the venue as well.
H. E. the Governor arrived with his party unannounced and enjoyed an evening of dancing. He didn’t make a speech this year.
During the evening a moment’s reflection was held in honour of Jon Felton, 2004 Prince Charming, who sadly lost his life on Tuesday nitht. After the moment he was given three cheers and a round of applause.
Au usual, there were many people to thank for this year’s May Ball and these are Mrs. Jan Miller for Tiaras and flowers, Nicki Buxton for the May Queen’s sash, The Dance Club for lessons and music, FIODA for Stage Support, the Print Shop for programmes, Michele’s Café for refreshments, The Museum and National Trust for research, the Post Office Philatelic Bureau, British Antarctic Survey and parents and friends who assisted in any way.
