OCEAN 8 SINKS IN BERKLEY SOUND

By J. Brock (FINN)

Korean Fishing Vessel Ocean 8 has sunk in Berkley Sound on Monday, 19 May 2008 at approximately 1000hrs LMT.

Prior to the sinking the vessel, which had been at anchor at a position of 51.33.854S and 057.54.27W, was reported to be drifting and fires had flared up aboard the vessel.

Prior to this incident, reports stated that the temperature of the hull has decreased from approximately 45C to 25C and that water is being pumped from the vessel and it was thought that remaining hot spots had been dealt with.  The vessel will be boarded on Friday for further inspection and assessment of fire damage.

According to FIRS, Falklands Conservation Officer, Mr Grant Munro, is visiting the area to assess the environmental damage caused by the sinking.
