Falklands : Falklands: Update on the Ocean 8 Fire
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 07.05.2008 (Current Article)

The Fire and rescue service planned to board the vessel on Wednesday once it was considered to be safe.

UPDATE ON OCEAN 8 FIRE

By J. Brock (FINN)

After two days the fire onboard the Korean fishing vessel, Ocean 8 is reported to be under control.  Leyla Crowie of FIRS said that Chief Fire Officer, Gardner Fiddes, reported the Ocean 8 is stable with only a small fire continuing inside the ship’s accommodation block.

The vessel that caught on fire in Berkley Sound on Sunday evening was evacuated, with crewmembers are being looked after in the Seamen’s mission.

Presently the Fire and Rescue service are keeping an eye on the vessel with the Chief Fire Officer saying on Tuesday that he didn't expect there will be any subsequent pollution from the ship.

The Fire and rescue service planned to board the vessel on Wednesday once it was considered to be safe.  However, the fire flared up again and is reported to have spread to other parts of the ship including the No 2 fish hold.  There were problems with excess water on the vessel and only one pump was working at the time of this update.  The situation is still fluid and we await an official report.

Once ashore crew-members went to the Lighthouse Seamen’s Centre where Howard and Betty Turner did their best to provide emergency relief to 31 men.  The Centre is proving hot meals for the men during the remainder of this week until they are repatriated.

John Turner from the Lighthouse Seamen’s Mission reports that this has seriously depleted emergency supplies and they would be pleased with any donations of clothing to help them re-stock for readiness for future need.
