FIRE ON SHIP IN BERKLEY SOUND

As Reported on FIRS by Leyla Crowie and Stacey Bragger 05/05/08

36 crewmembers off a Korean fishing vessel were rescued last night in Berkley Sound after a fire broke out onboard.  The crewmembers were transported to another fishing vessel in Berkley Sound and now are safe and sound in Stanley.  The fire and rescue service have been dealing with the fire.  Airport Fire Officer, Andrew Miller (AM),  was in the first team on the scene.

AM:  We were called to a ship fire at about 1942hrs  last night on a trawler, the OCEAN * - Korean –Trawler.  We were told there was a Control panel fire which was quite small at the time which very quickly got out of control.  By the time we got out there at 2130hrs the fire was right out through the deck. – right up through the bridge and well up the mast.  The team of four put the fire out on the outside but there was quite a major fire in the accommodation but it does seem to be contained in the accommodation at the moment.

There is no one on the ship.  It’s anchored off in Berkley Sound.  Basically we are just boundary cooling and will most likely wait for the fire to burn itself out in the accommodation because it’s just not safe at the moment to get anyone onboard the ship.

The second crew went up at 0300hrs on Monday and my crew came back in and Gardner Fiddes is just now taking another crew up to monitor the fire during the day today and then he will make a decision this evening as to what can be done.

There is power on the ship but it is just a case of boundary cooling and just letting the fire die down.
