(Landmines)


Multi-million pound plans to finally rid the Falkland Islands of thousands of deadly landmines left behind by Argentinian forces 26 years ago are being considered in Whitehall.


The move comes after a ground-breaking study concluded for the first time that it would be possible to clear the estimated 16,000 devices littering the islands in the wake of the 1982 conflict.

Two UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) chiefs have been finding out more about the vital survey work being carried out in the inhospitable Antarctic.


UKHO Chief Executive, Mike Robinson, and UK National Hydrographer, Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff, spent time on the ground and at sea in this remote part of the world, with its own particular Safety Of Life At Sea problems, to see the problems and challenges of surveying in this region.

The Argentine Navy’s oceanographic vessel “Puerto Deseado” has been commissioned to collect scientific and technical data on the seabed to the north of the Falklands and all the way to South Georgia. Information gathered from the survey would be used in Argentina’s presentation before the United Nations to have its continental platform border and rights extended from 200 to 350 miles. [It is] reported that the Falkland Islands Acting Governor General Paul Martinez confirmed that neither the Falklands nor the UK government had been informed of the intentions of the “Puerto Deseado”, nor had the Argentines made any official request to operate within Falkland Islands or South Georgia waters. MT CHAITEN ERUPTS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2000 YEARS

On Friday at 1000hrs GMT Mt. Chaiten, in Southern Chile Erupted, spewing ash over an area that included the town of Chaiten, in Chile.  All but a few residents have been evacuated to Chiloe Island and Puerto Montt.


It is reported that ash is covering large areas of Chile and Argentina, with the plume at its height spewing ash 20 KM into the atmosphere.  It is not known yet whether the ash will reach the Falklands.


In 1991 when the ash from Mt Hudson reached the Falklands it caused damage to the teeth of grazing animals like sheep, cattle and horses.

It had lain dormant for thousands of years but Chaiten, the snow capped volcano in Chile’s Patagonian region, burst back into life, forcing 4,500 people to flee their homes on Friday.
