St Helena : New St Helena Stamp Issue Commemorates the RAF at 90
Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Juanita Brock) 16.04.2008 (Article Archived on 30.04.2008)

The St Helena Post Office has issued a new set of stamps to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

New Stamp Issues for Post Office

Commemorating 90th Anniversary

Of the Royal Air Force

The St Helena Post Office has issued a new set of stamps to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force. The six stamps were issued on 1 April 2008 and will be available for sale for 15 months or until stocks are exhausted. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the first day covers will only become available from 18 April.

This is the first stamp issue for 2008, but five more are expected to follow during the year.

Postmistress, Beverley Francis has described the stamps as “a must have for stamp collectors with an interest in aviation or the Royal Air Force in general.” She added that while the planes that are depicted may not have visited St Helena, the Royal Air Force has visited the Island on a number of occasions. For this reason, the Stamp Committee considered it to be a fitting theme and decided to depict the planes through the years.

The stamps are designed by CASCO Studio and are available from the Post Office in Jamestown. They are also on sale on the Post Office website at www.postoffice.gov.sh or via the website for CASCO Philatelic Services at www.cascophilatelic.com

The Post Office is expecting the stamps to generate much interest among stamp collectors and this should, in turn, generate good revenue for the Island.

For 2007, the most successful stamp issues were Christmas 2007 part II and The Napoleons. Both issues were designed by Julian Vasarheyli and the Napoleon issue sold out completely on St Helena.
