Falklands : Island Spammers Ain't Necessarily So

It's mainland spammers who steal e-mail addresses to suit.

ISLAND SPAMMERS – AIN’T NECESSARILY SO

By J. Brock (FINN)

It was with consternation that I read articles recently about Islands spamming the system with all sorts of Viagra, sex, Rolex, winners and gaming ads.  But have pity on most of these people as they are being imitated and not spamming.

If you do a return path on these messages you will find that they are from IP addresses in Denmark, Russia, Netherlands, Eastern Europe and China.  Spammers are good at simply stealing e-mail addresses that suit them and sending out this rubbish in your name.

When you delete spam and then find your e-mail address in the blocked senders list and it isn’t you who sent it, rest assured that it was sent in your name and the culprit can be traced back to a single computer - most times not yours.

Agreed, some computers’ anti virus and firewall protection is not up to scratch but the majority of those who suffer from e-mail address theft have more than adequate protection on their computers.

So, it isn’t always remote Islanders who willy-nilly send out spam.  More often than not it is mainland spammers who do the dirty on us.
