ILLEX SEASON HEATS UP
By J. Brock (FINN)
Over the past week there have been several jiggers in the harbour – all after one thing – a licence to catch Illex. Radio traffic has increased and reports are coming in about reasonable catches. Given the two excellent seasons in 2006 and 2007, companies should be quick to take up the licences on offer. According to Director of Fisheries, John Barton, who spoke to FIRS on Friday, terms of payment can include guarantees of licence fees so that companies can see how the season is going before they make a commitment.
It’s early days yet and if the fishing is good there could be more companies collecting licences. Thus far, companies have applied for fifty licences with a few companies still sorting out payments. These numbers are down on previous years.
Finally, Taiwanese Jigger Win Fu Li ran aground in Port William at 0800 on Friday morning. She was free just before noon.
