Although it is not always possible to inform the public concerning engineering details on the RMS St.Helena, we are obviously aware that there is a high level of interest in such matters.

RMS St Helena: Port Engine Problem

Although it is not always possible to inform the public concerning engineering details on the RMS St.Helena, we are obviously aware that there is a high level of interest in such matters. With that in mind, and in the interests of following our policy of being as open and transparent as is possible, it is our intention to issue statements whenever accurate information is available.

The RMS has been a very reliable work-horse for many years, but she is not getting any younger. That means that in spite of fulfilling all maintenance requirements, problems may arise from time to time. SHL have today advised that the port engine is not functioning as efficiently as we would wish. This is due to the fact that the exhaust manifold on No.3 port cylinder head has fractured.

Although temporary repairs have been effected, arrangements are being made to fly the necessary spares to Ascension to connect with the vessel there. It is not expected that this will delay the ship on its voyages between St Helena and Ascension.

Being en route to Ascension myself I will obviously take a particularly close interest in how the situation develops.
