S.Atlantic : QEII Unable to Visit Falklands
Submitted by SARTMA.com (Juanita Brock) 08.11.2003 (Article Archived on 22.11.2003)

On Remembrance Sunday there would have been passengers from the QEII visiting Stanley.

QEII VUNABLE TO VISIT THE FALKLANDS

The arrival of the QEII to the Falklands on Sunday would have marked 10 + years since her last visit on 22 January 1993. On the previous arrival, the Cunard Liner anchored at Sparrow Cove in Port William and was surrounded by several small craft with people taking photographs. The Able-J also circled the QE2 with her contingent of crew and cameramen (at the time that vessel was participating in the filming of "Life In The Freezer"). In 1993 members of the media were practically the only visitors allowed aboard QE2 as security was, and now still is, very strict.

Passengers aboard the liner would have had the opportunity to experience Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the Cathedral and at the Cross of Sacrifice. Unfortunately, the foul weather made it unsafe for the QE2 to anchor in Port William, so she had to give the Falklands a miss. Several businesses lost out when passengers didn’t arrive. Her next scheduled visit, according to the Cunard Website, will be on 29 November 2004.

The QEII was used as a troop carrier during the Falklands war in 1982.
