St Helena : St Helenians on New Years Honours List
Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Juanita Brock) 04.01.2008 (Article Archived on 18.01.2008)

H. E. the Governor Mr Andrew Gurr has announced two from St. Helena are on H.M. the Queen's New Years Honours List.

NEW YEAR HONOURS 2008

It gives me great pleasure to announce the awards of Officer of  the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) to Mrs Ethel Caroline Yon and, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire to (MBE) to Miss Jenny Corker. These awards were included in the 2008 New Year Honours List published in London.

The award to Mrs Yon was recommended not only for her continued dedicated and loyal service to the St Helena Government but also in recognition of her more recent service in the very demanding positions of Acting Chief Secretary and Acting Governor. She made local history when she was first appointed Acting Governor in February 2006, a position that had not been bestowed upon any St Helenian since the 1800’s.  Her understanding of good governance and political awareness were such that she was further appointed Acting Governor on three occasions in 2007.

The award to Miss Corker was recommended in recognition of her services in both the public and private sectors where she has worked for Messrs Solomon and Company and the St Helena Audit Service.   It also recognises her own professional development and her achievement as a Fellow of the Association of Accounting Technicians and her continued willingness to teach others.  Her contribution to the voluntary sector as a long serving member of the Society for the Disabled has also been recognised.

Andrew Gurr

Governor
