ROYAL MARINES MEMORIAL STONE BROUGHT TO STANLEY
By J. Brock (FINN)
At noon a British International Helicopter piloted by Terry Murphy and Martin “Curley” Elstow was seen landing and then taking off near the Triangle adjacent to Government House. Former Para, Ron Bragg supervised the transport of a centrepiece for the Royal Marines Monument. It had flown in from Saunders Island was rather heavy and very special indeed.
According to FIRS the stone is to be a centrepiece for the monument that is being built by the Royal Marines Association to mark the Corps’ long association with the Falkland Islands since 1765 when Royal Marines landed at Port Egmont on Saunders Island.
A Corps Crest will be mounted on the stone. A natural stone wall has been built in the triangle by Alan Ross and Peter Gallegos to augment the memorial.
David Pole-Evans located the stone and gave it to the Association for the project.
