Prince Andrew School has published a full colour, hardback book entitled “St Helena, Then and Now, 1817 – 2007”
Head teacher, Derek Henry describes the work as “a high quality, glossy ‘coffee table’ book of contemporary photographs of St Helena as seen through the eyes of our young people”. He added: “the book aims to provide a flavour of what the Island was like in the early eighteen hundreds compared to now. The students who worked on the project were dedicated, enthusiastic and we commend them for their involvement. We are extremely proud of the final result.”
The book is the brainchild of Michel Dancoisne-Martineau and Chief Education Officer, Pamela Lawrence.
Michel worked with the students to get the book published with assistance from Susan O’Bey, Pat Joshua and some of the teachers.
The project commenced in March 2006 and all students were invited to participate. Students received training in basic digital photography and then embarked on taking photographs of the places mentioned in a military report. A previously unpublished military report by Major A Emmett and Lieutenant B Jackson (1816) is included in the book, along with a report from the St Helena Records dated 1817 on the state of public buildings in Jamestown.
Most of the work was completed in the students’ own time although some trips were also organised in school time, providing students with the opportunity to explore the Island, its history and its scenery.
Derek is hoping that similar projects will be developed in the future and he said “while there are no definite plans at this point, the book will no doubt inspire others to become involved in future projects.”
The book was officially launched at a special school assembly on 15 November at Prince Andrew School in the presence of Governor and Mrs Gurr.
Copies of the book are now on sale at various outlets.
