The St Helena Government has, today, released the St Helena Sustainable Development Plan. This is a comprehensive document and is effectively a three-year rolling plan for the Island that will be reviewed on an annual basis.
Martin Hallam, the new Chief Secretary, described it as “one of St Helena’s most important documents and one which the Government will be using to ensure everyone on the Island becomes familiar with the work SHG is undertaking on their behalf.”
The Sustainable Development Plan, or SDP builds on the six priority strategic objectives and contains details on key areas of work that are an essential part of the process to prepare the Island for the opening of the Airport. This includes: promoting private sector development, further developing tourism, education, health and much more.
The six priority objectives which the SDP will build on are:
1 Improved Access
2 Continue to improve the standard of education for the people of St Helena
3 Development of a sustainable and vibrant economy to the benefit of St Helena
4 Develop a healthy community in a safe environment
5 Promote and develop a sustainable workforce
6 Continue to develop and establish the democratic and human rights and self-determination of the people of St Helena.
The SDP is the Government’s flagship policy document looking out to 2010 and will guide Departments on how they contribute to the realisation of the Vision for St Helena - ‘A prosperous, peaceful and democratic society for all achieved through sustainable economic, environmental, and social development leading to a healthy and eventually financially independent St Helena.’
The SDP will be closely followed by all government departments and progress will be monitored by a committee, which will comprise both public and private sector representatives and is to be chaired by the Chief Secretary.
Importantly, the SDP has been the subject of wide consultation and the final document takes account of suggestions and comments from stakeholders including members of the public. As a result it should be seen as an Island-owned document, which has the support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development.
As the first step in ensuring the public becomes familiar with the plan, the St Helena Government has produced a four page summary sheet, which provides a useful overview of what is a substantial document.
Copies of the SDP and summary sheet can be viewed at the Public Library in Jamestown or collected from Reception at the Office of the Chief Secretary, The Castle.
