S.Atlantic : Stranded Saints Seek Support form Home
Submitted by SARTMA.com (Juanita Brock) 28.08.2007 (Article Archived on 11.09.2007)

Jill Roberts has put out a passionate plea to help get her family home for the funeral of Sara Marie Crowie. The St Helena Government's Response is also included.

SAINTS ON THE FALKLAND ISLANDS HAVE NO SUPPORT FROM HOME

(A press Release from Jill Roberts)

SIX SAINT HELENIANS ON THE FALKLAND ISLANDS, WHO WERE TRYING TO GET THE RMS ST HELENA TO WAIT OVER NIGHT ON ASCENSION ISLAND, OUR FEELING THAT THE ISLANDS GOVERNMENT HAS NO SUPPORT OR CONSIDERATION FOR FAMILY BEREAVEMENT.

THE SUDDEN DEATH OF 27 YEAR OLD SARA MARIE CROWIE ON THURSDAY BROUGHT SHOCK TO ALL THE FAMILY AND THE LOVE ONES LEFT BEHIND.  SIX SAINT HELENIANS WHICH INCLUDED THE MOTHER AND SISTER OF SARA PLEADED WITH AND DID EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO GET SAINT HELENA GOVERNMENT TO KEEP THE RMS ON ASCENSION ISLAND FOR ONE MORE DAY TO ALLOW THE FAMILY TO TRAVEL HOME TO BE WITH THE REST OF THE FAMILY AND OFFER SUPPORT.

THIS REQUEST WAS DENIED AND REASON GIVEN TO THIS WAS BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE COST SAINT HELENA GOVERNMENT A LOT OF MONEY TO KEEP THE SHIP IN PORT AND THE SHIP WOULD BE FORCED TO SAIL FULL STEAM TO CAPETOWN, AS THEY HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CRANE ON BOARD.

SO IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY AND THE CRANE.

HOW SAD IS THAT.  IT MAKES ONE WONDER WHY SO MANY SAINT LEAVE THE ISLAND AND NEVER RETURN.

THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE INVOLVED WHO TRIED THEIR VERY BEST TO HELP OUT WITH THIS MATTER

PRESS RELEASE

REQUEST TO DELAY DEPARTURE OF RMS ‘ST HELENA’ FROM ASCENSION ISLAND

Following the tragic death on 23 August 2007 of Ms Sara Crowie of Ladder Hill, a request was made to the St Helena Government, by members of her family, for the departure from Ascension Island of the RMS ‘St Helena’ to be delayed, to enable close relatives working on the Falkland Islands to return home at the earliest opportunity.   The RMS was due to depart Ascension Island on Friday, 24th August; the flight from the Falklands was scheduled to arrive at Ascension Island at 21:20 hours on Saturday evening.

At the request of one of the members of the Executive Council, the Acting Governor agreed to call an Executive Council meeting on Friday morning to enable Members to discuss the request.

After careful consideration, Executive Council’s advice to the Acting Governor was that the departure of the RMS ‘St Helena’ should not be delayed. Council’s advice was based on the negative financial implications that could materialise for the Island as a whole if the RMS was unable to maintain its current scheduled arrival and departure dates in Cape Town.  In addition, Council took into account the possibility of any unforeseen eventualities that could occur during the current financial year relating to the RMS ‘St Helena’ which could involve additional expenditure and impact on the Island’s limited financial resources.

Council recalled that similar requests to delay the RMS had been submitted in the past from relatives overseas who wished to return to the Island for emergency compassionate reasons, similar to this, and in each incidence, the requests were not supported due to the resulting financial implications of delaying the ship.

As a result of this advice, Andrew Weir Shipping Limited was advised that the departure of the RMS ‘St Helena’ from Ascension Island should not be delayed.

SHG has given all assistance possible, except financially, by way of ensuring that berths would be available if the family decided to travel via Cape Town and that keeping the body beyond the 18-day period would not involve additional expenditure for the family.

Note:  SARTMA’s condolences go to the family of Sara Marie Crowie and SARTMA’s empathy goes with the struggle to get the family home to St. Helena.  The scenario is worthy of debate as schedules of the RMS to meet the air-bridge could be better co-ordinated.  This not only would help families needing to get home but it also would benefit other visitors as well as tourism.

SARTMA also appreciates the huge cost it would take to alternatively fly six members of the family from the UK to Cape Town to await the RMS.
