CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER WARNS OF BOTULISM IN FOREIGN CANNED GOODS

By J. Brock (FINN)

Last week CNN reported about a botulism outbreak in the US that had affected as many as four people.  The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta was informed on 21 July 2007 about the outbreak and identified the company responsible. This outbreak has local implications in that the US Company exports its products.  Dr. Roger Diggle, the Chief Medical Officer, has warned people travelling to Chile and Peru to avoid canned food products produced by Augusta Georgia based Castlebury Food Company.  Canned Hotdog-Chilli Sauce is especially pointed out as the culprit.  According to official sources none of the affected products have been imported into the Falklands but retailers are remaining vigilant.
