WORKERS UNCOVER 1,000 POUND BOMB AT STANLEY AIRPORT

By J. Brock (FINN)

Workers excavating for a building at Stanley Airport have uncovered a 1,000-pound bomb that has been present in the area since the 1982 conflict, when a Vulcan Bomber discharged its cargo near the runway.  Instead of exploding, it bored into the peat where it remained for 21 years.

Immediately the Explosive Ordinance Detachment (EOD) was deployed and after inspection they confirmed that it was a real 1,000-pound bomb. Police immediately cordoned off an area around the airport and evacuated the facility.

The cordon is maintained by The Royal Falkland Islands Police while the situation progressed. At this writing, EOD are still dealing with the incident.

At 1840, FIBS announced that EOD were standing down for the night and would resume dealing with the bomb on Friday.  All flights into and out of Stanley Airport have been cancelled until further notice.
