On Monday the MoD in London announced plans to provide the RAF with a modern capability to replace the ageing VC10 and TriStar aircraft though the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) project. This includes the South Atlantic air-bridge in the overall FSTA requirement.
The preferred bidder - AirTanker Ltd - will use an Airbus A330-200, which has an excellent passenger carrying capability. It is planned that FSTA will be brought into service from 2011, although its availability to meet airbridge requirements will depend upon world-wide operational commitments a the time.
MoD will continue its dialogue with FIG on the future development of the service.
