A meeting of the Fisheries Committee took place at 0830hrs on Tuesday, 05 June 2007.


 


After apologies and declarations of interest the minutes of the meeting held on 04 April 2006 were confirmed. 


FISHERIES: A BRIEF COMMITTEE REPORT

A meeting of the Fisheries Committee took place at 0830hrs on Tuesday, 05 June 2007.


 


After apologies and declarations of interest the minutes of the meeting held on 04 April 2006 were confirmed.  After a brief discussion about Loligo Fees and a stock assessment report, Director of Fisheries Dr. John Barton gave an update on thefishery.


 


Loligo Gahi:


 


The season finished early with 17,400 tonnes caught.  Dr. Barton described the catch as “reasonable.”


 


Illex:


 


The season ended on 31 May 2007 with 156tonnes caught.  That’s an average of 3,000 per vessel.  As reported the markets are flooded with Illex with many tonnes were caught in the Argentine Zone as well as on the high seas.


 


Hake:


 


5,000tonnesof hake – a catch large for the Falklands but insignificant in world terms – were caught this season.


 


Red Cod:


 


15,000 tonnes of Red Cod were caught this season.
