Former Falklands resident, David “Aldo” Alderson has received a Humane Society medal from Princess Alexandra in the UK last Thursday.  Mr Alderson received his award for bravery as a result of his actions in Southern Lebanon last year, when he rescued a shepherd while clearing unexploded ordinance and lost his lower leg.       Mine clearing experts, Nabil Hammond from Teir Diba and Damir  Parazdik (also losing a leg) from Bosnia and  Herzegovina were with Mr. Alderson when the accident happened.  The shepherd escaped unharmed.

ArmorGroups, a protective security services provider, had employed the men to help clear Southern Lebanon of unexploded ordinance after the Israeli – Hisbolah conflict that left much of the area devastated.

The Royal Humane Society was founded in London in 1774, with the bronze medal awarded to people who have put their lives at great risk to save or attempt to save another person.

In a company press release, Dave Seaton, ArmorGroups chief executive officer, said: "We are very proud of the awards made to Dave, Damir and Nabil which highlight

their selfless action in support of a local farmer.

"They and our other mine action employees carry out dangerous and   highly skilled tasks every day to allow local communities to repopulate their homes and restart their economy safely and confidently. We wish them well in their further recovery and look  forward to them returning to work with us soon."

FINN would like to acknowledge the proud grandparents, Barbara and Bill Curtiss and the Saltburn Gazette for the information and the supply of photos.
