AMONIA EXPLOSION LEAVES 10 IN HOSPITAL

By J. Brock (FINN)

An explosion caused by leaking ammonia has left 10 crewmembers from a Taiwanese jigger in the KEMH.  The incident happened aboard Ji Hin 6 at approximately 2115hrs on the evening of Monday, 09 April 2007.

At the time of the incident the jigger was transhipping to the Reefer, Viviana in Berkley Sound.  The shipping agents, the Falkland Islands Company, were immediately informed and the FIC shipping agent quickly informed the Fisheries Department’s duty fisheries officer.  The KEMH and the Fire and Rescue Service were also contacted.  Crew from the vessel also informed the agent that three were unconscious and a further 10 suffering with vomiting.

Two FIC launches, Speedwell and Beagle, were used to transport a medical team and the fire team and equipment.  Breathing apparatus and fans for ventilation were used to help in the rescue effort.

The duty fisheries officer contacted the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at Mount Pleasant and a SeaKing search and rescue helicopter was dispatched from 78 Squadron to take the unconscious men to the KEMH.  The helicopter was met by the ambulance and medical staff at approximately 1140hrs.  Ten less affected crew members came ashore on the launches.

As of this morning the FIC report that 3 crew members are in the Ross Complex and 10 are still being treated in the KEMH.

FINN would like to thank all those who called last night with information about this incident.  At this time a police press release has not been received.  It will be published in due course.
