Falklands : Fishermen Jump Ship in Stanley Harbour
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 19.02.2007 (Article Archived on 05.03.2007)

Reported Indonesian fishermen off a Taiwanese Jigger have jumped into Stanley harbour presumably to escape harsh living and/or working conditions aboard.

KOREAN FISHERMEN JUMP SHIP IN STANLEY HARBOUR

The rescue effort is still underway.

By J. Brock (FINN)

An as yet undetermined number of Indonesian fishermen (Some reports say eight and others say ten.) have jumped overboard from a Taiwanese Jigger in Stanley harbour while the vessels were collecting their fishing licences.

The incident began around 1700hrs when ships crew reported that the men were about to jump.

A helicopter from 78 Squadron and divers were tasked to rescue the fishermen from the frigid waters.

It is reported that two Korean fishermen are still missing at this time.  The helicopter left the scene when the light was too poor to do any more work – at approximately 1935hrs.

It has been reported that the rescued fishermen are under observation at the KEMH and that they have suffered bruising from an as yet undetermined source.  Those ships in the harbour when the photos were taken have now been granted permission to leave and are no longer in the harbour.

A photo accompanies this brief article.  Due to the rescue efforts still going on the name of the jigger and the names of the Korean fishermen involved have not been released.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Falklands waters.  Mainly those fishermen who jump ship in this way are dissatisfied with their living and/or working conditions aboard ship.

This story is on-going and will be updated when more information has come to light. Both the Royal Falkland Islands Police and the Agents refused to disclose the nationality of the fishermen but three fishing companies said they were Korean.  It was later discovered that the men were indonesian.  It's anybody's guess, really but apologies to the Koreans for not being pshchic.
