PRESS RELEASE

At the Executive Council meeting held on 6 February 2007, Council considered the way forward with regard to the Undertakings given and the Resolutions made at the Legislative Council meeting held on 29 January 2007.

With regard to the various Undertakings, follow-up action was delegated to the appropriate members to pursue within their respective department.  Of the 5 Resolutions made, it was noted that the Registered Land (Amendment) Ordinance and the Public Health (Amendment) (Revision of Penalties) Ordinance had been enacted.  It was agreed that the Resolution relating to the consideration of sourcing alternative energy supplies would be pursued as an agenda item by the Public Works and Services Committee in the first instance.  The Resolution “That freedom of trade be given (so far as it serves the public interest) to all those engaged in the supplying of food to the people of this Island” will be taken forward by the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

With regard to the Resolution “That this House resolves that in order to safeguard all employees on St Helena, SHG should endeavour to put in place, as soon as practicable, legislation to regulate terms and conditions of employment”, it was agreed that this should be pursued by the Office of the Chief Secretary with input from the Social Development Planner and substantive Government Economist when they have been appointed.
