Press Release

St Helena’s First Walking Festival

St Helena will host its first Walking Festival  from 30 April to 8 May 2007 with walkers due to join the RMS St Helena in Cape Town on 23 April.

Pamela Young, Director of Tourism, said that a number of specialised walks have been planned. This includes a guided historical walk of Jamestown and around the boundary wall of Longwood, as well as a sponsored Country moonlight stroll followed by soup and rolls; there is also a “spiders at night” walk starting with Ploe; a coastal walk to Lot’s Wife’s Ponds, a walk through Diana’s Peak National Park and the big walk from district to district - The District Shuffle!  In addition there will be time for visitors to follow some of their own pursuits and buy crafts & souvenirs.

Pamela is pleased that the festival has come to fruition after many months of planning and said: “ The support and contribution from all involved in the programme is immeasurable and very much appreciated.  Events such as these are important for raising local and global awareness of St Helena and what we have to offer.    We look forward to lots of participants – local and international!”

The Tourist Office has produced the programme of walks which will be published at the end of January. In addition, they will assist with accommodation bookings, car hire and tours as people will be on-island for just over a week.

It is anticipated that the Walking Festival will become a regular event as is the Governor’s Cup Yacht Race, Festival of Running, and the Festival of Arts and Culture.
