Customer Care Training For
The Long Term Unemployed

As part of the UNDP funded project, “Training Long-Term Unemployed”, the St Helena Development Agency has delivered customer care training to a number of unemployed people. The course, which took three days to deliver, focused on customer care and how to exceed the customer’s expectations.
UNDP Trainer/Assessor, Susanne Willerup, explained that 60 unemployed on the Community Work’s Scheme have identified their training needs and accordingly various courses have been planned. Following on from this, the customer care course was arranged through the Adult Vocational Education Centre.
She said: “I congratulate the people who have achieved their Certification. I participated in the course as an observer and am sure that future employers will welcome the skills these trainees have obtained.”
The objectives of the course were to help people gain an understanding of what excellent customer service is, to learn to demonstrate excellent customer service through verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and to learn how to handle complaints.
Trainees learnt why customer care is so important, who the customer is, what the customer wants and needs, what customer care is, what to do when things go wrong, and how to apply customer care.
Catherine Turner, Business Advisor from the St Helena Development Agency, said that the course covered all of the key components that are delivered to other clients in the private sector.
Susanne Willerup came to Saint Helena in June to take over as an Assessment and Training Consultant from Philip Hurst who left after having finished his assignment to develop training manuals.
An intensive training programme is already planned and will be carried out in October Quarter. These will include computer classes, literacy, numeracy, speech therapy and Foremen and Supervisors’ training.
In the January Quarter the training programme is still in the making but will include a second customer care course, computer classes, courses in job seeking and job retaining and various other vocational training programmes.
