Press Release

The Public Health and Social Services Department has been advised by NI-CO that Dr Kardam will not be able to return to the Island until October 2006 for personal reasons. Dr Kardam left St Helena on 25 June on overseas leave and was due to return on 12 September.

The matter was immediately taken up with NI-CO unfortunately, it was too late to get a locum surgeon to the Island before Dr Shetty leaves. This means that the Island will be without a surgeon until the RMS returns from her UK Voyage.

Dr Shetty had originally intended to depart St Helena on 7 September but kindly agreed to remain until 12 September.  Thanks and appreciation is extended to him for agreeing to this short extension. Dr Shetty will be able to clear up all the necessary surgery cases before he departs the Island and the Senior Medical Officer and his colleagues between them have skills and experience to cover any emergency surgical cases.

The public is requested to adhere to clinic consultation hours as far as possible. Out of clinic hours will be only for emergencies.
