TIME FOR THE SUNSCREEN – THE OZONE HOLE IS ON ITS WAY

By J. Brock (FINN)

With sun-up in Antarctica coming on 24 August, it’s time to think of protecting ourselves from the hole in the Ozone Layer.  Ozone depletion begins at sun-up on the continent and doesn’t end until October at the earliest.

The best advice is to cover up or use sunscreen when outdoors and to put on sunglasses while outside as well.  Even though there are clouds, people can get burned when the “hole” is above the Falklands.

The Ozone hole was discovered in the 1983/84 season at Halley Station in the Antarctic.   The US didn’t come onboard until 1986. when it sent a team of scientists to the Antarctic to check out the data provided by BAS and to do their own research.
