A prize-giving occurred at the Falkland Islands community School at 1400hrs on Wednesday, 09 August 2006.  Records of Achievement for graduating pupils also were handed out.

The Prize-giving began with music by the students including Dion Robertson on the Accordion and Marcus Porter playing the Bass Guitar as well as a student playing the piano.

After the arrival of the Acting Governor, Miss Harriet Hall, four students, who explained what happened during the school year, gave a welcome.  Dion Robertson welcomed Miss Hall and explained that Prize Giving was an important event on the school calendar and that awards were given for academic excellence, sport and those who worked hard to improve standards and participate fully in the life of the school.

Kimberly Buckett explained that the music department continues to maintain high standards.  She mentioned that one student in Key Stage three actually gained a Grade 5 Theory with Distinction in the Royal School of Music exams and that three students gained 100% in Grades 1 and 2.  Mrs. Shirley Adams Leach was thanked for her tireless work with music clubs and for helping students to prepare for performances.  She went on to explain about the coursework needed to achieve GCSEs.  Subjects she mentioned were: Art, with Mrs Tim Simpson, Design and Technology with Miss Carter, and Home Economics with Mrs. Milsome.  As well as mentioning the Sue Whitley Memorial Exhibition the Child Minding course conducted by Mrs Milsome, Ms Phillips, Mr Dent and Mr Miller was mentioned.  Sporting events, like the Tumbledown Run, Sports Day and Swimming Gala.  Thanks was given to Mr Lennon and Mr Hepworth for arranging after school sports and the FICS “World Cup” were also mentioned.  The Astronomy Club under Ms Taylor and Mr. Dent also received a mention.

Another student explained about Mrs. O’Sullivan’s programme for year 12 students and continued with participation from the wider community by giving presentations in the Careers and Citizenship programmes.  Presentations by MPA, the Fishing industry, Banking and from the Museum and National Trust featured in the programmes.  The Year 11 Work Experience Programme under Louise Taylor was given a thumbs-up.  Year 10 Citizenship activities and the Careers Fair were mentioned and employers and contributors thanked for participation.

The last student mentioned the loss of Marian Purvis as a valuable member of the school community and Alan Purvis as Head of the Community School.  Other departing staff members, Mr Austin, Mr and Mrs Clarke, Mrs Leann Ford, Mr Hepworth Mr Hicks and Mrs McCreedy were mentioned.  Miss Nelson was also thanked alongside Mrs Taylor.
