Falklands : Falklands Students Dare a NO to Drugs, Drink and Tobacco
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 07.08.2006 (Article Archived on 21.08.2006)

Year 6 Students in the Falklands have received their DARE Certificates.

FALKLANDS STUDENTS DARE TO SAY NO TO DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO

By J. Brock (FINN)

A DARE Graduation took place at the Infant/Junior School on Thursday, 03 August 2006.  In his introduction Sergeant Dave Roberts of the Royal Falkland Islands Police said that the DARE programme in the Falkland Islands has been going for eight years now and that nearly 400 students in Year 6 have received their DARE Certificates.  During that eight years the course had been adjusted to reflect the problems that young people were facing today.  He emphasised that DARE was not anti-alcohol but he did say that as adults these students needed to know how to drink sensibly.  However, he said that DARE WAS anti- smoking and anti drugs.

During the week the DARE graduates went, thanks to Falkland Islands Tours and Travel to Mount Pleasant Complex where they saw a demonstration by the JSPSU Dog Section, visited the Met Office and had pizza.  Sergeant Roberts went on to say that one of the most important aspects of DARE was to teach students how to make decisions using the DARE model – Define, Assess, Respond, and Evaluate.

Mr. Nicholas Barrett, Head of the Infant/Junior School, stressed the importance of parental support and general funding for the project.  He noted the energy of those who were involved in DARE as well as the sponsorship for the tee shirts.  He also thanked the organisations responsible for the DARE Programme in the Infant/Junior School.  They are:  The Argos Award, Argos Fishing Company Limited, DARE UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Stanley Infant and Junior School Falkland Printz, Falkland Islands Tours and Travel Limited, the NAAFI, Joint Services Police Dog Section, Met Office, Stanley Bakery Limited, the Royal Falkland Islands Police and Dave Roberts, the Falkland Islands Government, the Falkland Islands Chamber of commerce and parents and carers of the DARE Certificate recipients.  He was appreciative of the support that students got at home.

Mr Barrett’s speech was followed by six role-plays about how to say no to drugs, alcohol and tobacco.  Personal Commitments were made by Macauley Davis, Hannah Collier, Shaun Reynolds and Ariane Goss

First Secretary, Harriet Hall, presented the certificates to: Macauley Davis, Nathan Gemmill, Kyle Hobman, Marissa LeLec, Adam Minto, Ryan Poole, Kyle Velasquez, Mari-Ann Clarke, Damaris D’Avino, Sarah Gulley, Dominic Jaffray, Matthew Lazo, Paige Mitchell, Julian Pole-Evans, Shaun Reynolds and Rosin Stuart-Reed from Mrs. Short’s Year 6 Class.  Also presented with certificates were Chloe Anderson, Hannah Collier, Nina Humphreys, Matias Mery, Travis McGill, Ramelia PED, Roger Shillitoe, Keelan Fiddes, Reuben Cofre, Ariane Goss, Adrianna Merrey, Lauren McKay and Anthony Phillips from Mrs. Steen’s Year 6 Class.

The evening ended with a group photo and light refreshments.
