BIRTHDAY HONOURS 2006
It gives me great pleasure to announce the awards of Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire to Mr Rodney Benjamin and Mrs Raxa Sukhtankar for services to St Helena and Ascension Island, respectively. These awards were published in the 2006 Birthday Honours List published in London.
The award to Mr Benjamin was recommended in recognition of his outstanding performance in the nursing profession where he has tirelessly served for some thirty-five years. It recognises the skills and knowledge, which he has gained during this time, together with his dedication and commitment to the job and his willingness to pass on his skills to fellow nurses. Mr Benjamin has acquired high level specialised nursing and paramedical skills in the fields of radiography, ultrasound, accident and emergency nursing and anaesthetics. The award also recognises his role as a youth leader where he takes an active role in the training of young cadets in the Church Lads Brigade.
The award to Mrs Sukhtankar gives recognition to her voluntary services on Ascension Island over the past twenty years where she has been a major supporter of community based activities. She was the chairperson of the management committee for the Ascension newspaper –“the Islander”, was actively involved with the publication of a book to promote Ascension and has co-ordinated a number of fund raising activities for worthy causes such as the Tsunami disaster and the St Mary’s Church on Ascension. As a qualified nurse, and in the absence of any social services on Ascension, Mrs Sukhtankar has offered counselling to many people. She was one of the first democratically elected Councillors to serve on the Ascension Island Council during which time she advocated social equality and was sensitive to the environmental aspects of decision making on Ascension.
