Falklands : All Set for the Mid Winter Swim
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 06.06.2006 (Article Archived on 20.06.2006)

The shortest day and the coldest swim are about to take place in the Falklands.

ALL SET FOR THE MID WINTER SWIM

By J. Brock (FINN)

Our Northern Hemisphere readers might think it odd to have the shortest day on the 21st of June.  The low levels of light and cold temperatures for us mean that it is that time of year again when normally sane and rational people in the Falkland Islands tear off their clothes and throw themselves into the South Atlantic in the name of a good cause!

A sponsored Mid-Winter Swim will take place at Surf Bay, Airport Road, Stanley at 1130 on Sun 25 Jun 06 and will be in aid of two charities: the Seamen’s Mission and the Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association.

Swimmers are asked to arrive at the Surf Bay beach (GR 465724) by 1100 on the day for registration.  This traditional event is very well supported by British Forces South Atlantic Islands, who have always raised a considerable amount for the nominated charities.  The event is open to everyone and maximum participation from Mount Pleasant Complex is encouraged to come along and join in the lunacy.

Swimmers and supporters are invited to extend their day in Stanley with a barbecue on the beach after the swim and the opportunity to attend the swim party at the Victory Bar, Philomel Street after this.

JSEOD Stanley Det is requested to signify the start of the swim with the traditional ‘bang’.

The Seamans’ Mission will provide hot drinks; the PMC of the Hillside Mess will donate a bottle of rum to improve the drinks and Hillside NAAFI is also will donate a bottle of rum to do the same. The Master Chef (Hillside) will provide a barbeque at Surf Bay in aid of the charities.  These plans could change should there be other priorities on the day.

All those attending the swim should arrange their own transport.

Participants are urged to obtain sponsorship for their efforts in support of the 2 charities.  All sponsorship forms enable an automatic entry to the prize draw.  Forms are available from MP Travel (in the JEC), the Stanley Leisure Centre and the Seamen’s Mission next to the Falkland Islands Port and Storage System (FIPASS).
