Falklands : Proposed Communications Working Group for the Falklands
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 07.05.2006 (Article Archived on 21.05.2006)

Cable and Wireless have invested heavily on Mobile Phones and Broadband.

PROPOSED NEW COMMUNICATIONS WORKING GROUP FOR THE FALKLANDS

By J. Brock (FINN)

Councillors met recently with the Cable and wireless to discuss the way forward for communications in the Falklands.  Several strategies were considered as well as setting up a working group to discuss new technology and communications infrastructure sharing.

Camp especially would benefit from better technology as sometimes it is frustrating to use the internet especially when large files have to be downloaded.  Businesses in Camp need better Communications if they are to do well and help the Camp economy.

It is thought that the Group would discuss some of the options in Dr. Chris Doyle’s report.

Members of Council express satisfaction that Cable & Wireless have spent significant amounts of money on the Mobile Phone system and are investing in broadband.  According to Cllr. Summers, April’s Chairman of GPC, Cable & Wireless have some technological problems with broadband that they hope to resolve shortly.  Cable and Wireless have an exclusive contract, so Councillors are keen to see rapid development on broadband.

Cllr. Summers says that Cable & Wireless have identified areas where capabilities and technologies can be shared fairly quickly.  He went on to say that while Cable & Wireless were doing their job, people weren’t wholly enthusiastic about it.

It is hoped that the working group would help spark up the enthusiasm.
