NEW PATROL VESSEL FOR THE FALKLANDS
By Ian Moncrieff (CBFSAI)
HMS CLYDE is coming to the Falkland Islands to replace HMS DUMBARTON CASTLE as the FALKLAND ISLANDS PATROL VESSEL (FIPV). CLYDE's sister ships in the class - MERSEY and SEVERN are employed on UK Fishery Protection duties.
CLDE is being built by VT and is a bigger and more capable ship than the Castle Class that she is replacing. She launches this June and will be named in a ceremony in September to which the Governor and CBF have been invited. She will be manned by Royal Navy but her maintenance will be run under a Contractor Logistic Support (CLS) contract by VT. Essentially the RN leases the ships of the class with an option to purchase in 2012.
CLYDE is a planned to be operating in the FI from late May/early June 2007.
