COUNCILLORS FROM THE SOUTH ATLANTIC ATTEND THE CPA CONFERENCE IN MALTA

By J. Brock (FINN)

Councillors from the Falkland Islands and St. Helena will be attending the 37th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference of the British and Mediterranean Region from 23 to 29 April 2006.  Falklands Councillors Ian Hansen and Mike Rendell will be joined by St. Helena Councillors Stedson George and Lionel Williams in Valetta where they have been invited to put forward items for discussion.  It is thought that Falklands councillors will mention the war of economic terrorism being waged against the Islands by Argentina.  St. Helena’s Councillors will speak about subjects relevant to their Island as well as their dependencies, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

According to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Website there will be discussions generally about economies as well as tourism, education and government policy.  The discussions will also bea prelude to the main conference that is being held in Abuja, Nigeria this year from 1 to 10 September.

Along with Cyril Gunnell and Councillor Stedson Francis, the Acting Chief Secretary, Ethel Yon MBE, attended last year’s Conference in her capacity as Secretary to the St Helena Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Branch. In speaking about the benefits of such visits she said that it provides the opportunity to meet with fellow politicians, exchange views and to lobby on St Helena’s behalf.

Councillors Rendell, Hansen and Lionel Williams will also attend a CPA UK Seminar from 7 – 19 May 2006 following his attendance at the conference in Malta.  As well as being in London, Cllr Williams is likely to include travel to Brussels to visit the European Union Commission and also likely to visit the Birmingham City Council, and City Projects in Birmingham, meet with British MPs in constituencies in the West Midlands, and attend the National Assembly of Wales in Cardiff.
