Falklands : Illex Season Opens in Argentine Waters

ILLEX SEASON OPENS IN ARGENTINE WATERS

By J. Brock (FINN)

As a prelude to the opening of the Falklands Illex season in mid February, the Argentine Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Secretariat have opened the Argentine Illex fishery on Monday, 16 January 2006.  The areas the Argentines are fishing in the South Atlantic are from 44S to 46S30’ and 62W.

The FIS website states that Argentine fisheries research cruises have identified two commercial Illex stocks south of 44S.  According to Argentine fisheries regulations those taking Illex should ensure the sustainability of the fishery in that enough spawning stocks escape to produce next year’s commercial stock.

The quotas for Illex were set when INIDEP assessed the data collected when they researched the summer spawning stock and arrived at a figure they knew would ensure stock sustainability.
