Falklands : Ruler of Dubai Dies in Australia
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 04.01.2006 (Article Archived on 18.01.2006)

Sheikh Maktoum Rashid bin al-Maktoum, the generous man who gave the stallion, Thyer, to the Falklands, has died in Australia.

RULER OF DUBAI DIES IN AUSTRALIA

By J. Brock (FINN)

It is with regret that FINN announces the untimely death of Sheikh Maktoum Rashid bin al-Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday, 04 January 2006.  The Sheikh, who was in his mid sixties, died of a heart complaint while on a visit to Australia

Sheikh Maktoum’s generosity provided Falklands horse owners with Theyer, grandson of Najinski, for stud.  Thyer’s progeny helped to improve the bloodlines of Falklands’ horses and this was evident in the results of the recent Stanley Sports Association’s Race Meeting.

The Sheikh was a low profile leader, taking over from his father in 1990.  He delegated the day to day running of Dubai to his younger brother, the Entrepreneur Sheikh Mohammed.  Nonetheless, Sheikh Maktoum dedicated his lift to building his nation and doing good for his people.  He will be sadly missed.
