Ascension : Mozambican Artists Exhibits Paintings and Photography in Cornwall
Submitted by The Islander (Juanita Brock) 04.01.2006 (Article Archived on 18.01.2006)

Tara Pelembe, the Ascension Island Conservation Officer, is in England studying for her Masters Degree on an OTEP Scholarship. Her husband is exhibiting the photos and paintings.

Mozambican artist exhibits paintings and photography in Cornwall.

Art inspired by love and life, photography inspired by nature; this unique exhibition by Anselmo Pelembe, currently residing in Cornwall, is to open in Falmouth Art Centre on the 9th January 2006. The exhibition will run until the 13th January and is a combination of an exotic mixture of concepts, feelings and stunning natural images.

Cornwall.

Cornwall to be a place of calm, inspiration and opportunity. Before arriving here, I was not aware of its reputation as a centre of creativity. The diversity of ideas and exhibits I have encountered here is amazing.”

Maputo, Mozambique, during the time of civil war, Anselmo spent a few years in South Africa and later moved to the island of Ascension in the South Atlantic Ocean. His work reflects the experiences along the way, and highlights some of the images of nature he has so stunningly captured. Anselmo explains:

“I am a person who respects nature and the environment; I have worked for and believe in conservation as a necessary part of our responsibility to the planet. I feel that the way in which I can contribute is through using images of the wonders of nature as art to reach wide audiences, to share the beauty of the natural world.

His art is more personal, but with concepts, emotions and questions that are global. There are exhibits about love, about life, and about moments when natural disasters hit. Anselmo has this to say about his work:

“My art is different, it is simple, an expression of lines. I try use the simplicity of lines to express myself. The greatest depths are often found in simplicity.”

Mozambique. I trusted people and they attacked me from behind. I was angry, I was deeply disillusioned and sad, but I didn’t act upon any of these emotions, instead I decided to travel and join my son and my wife on a tiny island called Ascension. Although uncertain of what the future held, one certainty was that I needed to be refreshed, to find out who I really was. When I got to Ascension I started to paint again. I hadn’t painted for years. The strange thing was that my art didn’t reflect anything of sadness, anger or revenge, nothing like that came out. What came out in my expression was peace, love, caring about other people....”

Anselmo will be in Falmouth Art Centre from the 9th to the 13th January and will be available to talk about his work. The unique combinations of culture and experience make for an interesting, different, stunning exhibition.
