Ascension : Unauthorised Landing Puts Two in Jail
Submitted by The Islander (Juanita Brock) 05.06.2003 (Article Archived on 19.06.2003)

If you think you can just pop in to Ascension Island without prior permission, then think again. Two men say they thought they had obtained permission to land on the Island but were sadly mistaken.

UNAUTHORISED LANDING PUTS TWO IN JAIL

Unauthorised Landing Puts Two in Jail

Bob and Phil prior to departure from Ascension Island

An aircraft landed at Wideawake Auxiliary Airfield at approximately 0530 LMT on Wednesday and, as a result, landed its two occupants in jail for a few hours. Two Americans, Phil Ingogha from Tampa, Florida and Bob Tufts from Miami did not realise that Wideawake Airfield was off limits to civilian aircraft when they dropped in to buy some fuel whilst on their way to Sierra Leone. Taken immediately into custody, the Ferry Pilots got an official reprimand from Base Commander, Major Jeffrey Fasen before they were handed over to the Ascension Island Police.

The pair were dealt with and spent until 6:00 PM at the Ascension Island Jail. They spent the night at the Obsidian Hotel before being taken to Wideawake Airfield to continue their journey.

"I have never been arrested before in my life," said Mr. Tufts, who added that he thought he had authorisation secured by the owners of the plane.

Just after 8:30 AM on Thursday the plane took off to continue the journey after an unforgettable visit to Ascension.

Even with a new treaty allowing civilian flights, permission and/or prior arrangements will have to be granted before landing here.
