Ascension Island also held elections last week. Six hundred and ninety seven people were eligible to vote, however only a disappointing 39% of them actually turned up to cast a vote.
The following ten candidates successfully ran for the seven seats of Ascension Island Council. They were: Paul Bennett, Lawson Henry, Cyril Leo, Christopher Cochran, Peter Candy, Geoffrey Jones, and Caroline Yon.
Polling stations on Ascension Island were open from 0800 to 2000 hrs on the day and were located at: the Mountain View Club, Travellers Hill, the Library at the US Base, the Saints Club Cinema Hall in Georgetown and at the Two Boats Club. After 2000 the ballot boxes were taken to the Saints Club Cinema Hall, where they were counted.
The previous Council, the first ever Ascension Island Council, was dissolved by order of H. E. the Governor Mr. Clancy of St. Helena on Monday, 24 October 2005. The formal notice of election was published the same day. On 31 October 2005 any objections to the preliminary list of electors had to be submitted. Publication of the final list of electors took place on 01 November 2005, with Nomination Day held on 02 November 2005. The General Election took place on Wednesday, 16 November 2005.
The first ever elected Council on Ascension Island consisted of Johnny Hobson, Lawson and Iva Henry, Caroline Yon, Raxa Sukhtanker, Nicky Andrews and Peter Thomas. They were elected as a result of a careful constitutional process initiated by the then Governor of St. Helena, H. E. David Hollamby.
No Stranger to the Falklands is Geoff Jones, who was last here in October but had previously been the Financial Controller at Cable and Wireless in the Falklands. He now plies his financial knowledge to the Obsidian Hotel on Ascension Island, where he has settled. Caroline Yon and Lawson Henry were on the previous Council.
