Falklands : Museum Opens at North Arm
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 16.11.2005 (Article Archived on 30.11.2005)

Thanks to Eileen Jaffray, Leona and Dave Roberts and other residents of North Arm, there's a museum in the old store.

MUSEUM OPENS AT NORTH ARM

By J. Brock (FINN)

Thanks to the inspiration and hard work of Eileen Jaffray and that of Dave and Leona Roberts, the East Falkland settlement of North Arm now has its own museum.  Dave and Leona travelled to the settlement on Friday with a few bits and pieces from the museum like the figurehead of the “Horatio” that sunk in the late 19th century off North Arm and they began to work clearing out the original store building – that recently saw service as a warehouse behind the new store.

Eileen was keen to preserve and show Camp life and how it has changed.  According to Museum Curator, Leona Roberts Eileen has gathered bits and pieces from all over the settlement and has inspired people to look in sheds and in loft space for items of the past.

At the moment the new North Arm Museum is home for hundreds of old photographs of the settlement and families as well as the way of life in times past.  There is an excellent collection of horse gear.  Also on display are tools, household appliances like Tillie lamps and cooking pots etc.  There are also some of the old bins that were used in the original store for things like flour and raisins.

Thanks to Eileen’s persistence, more is coming in on a regular basis.
