UK OVERSEAS TERRITORIES CONSERVATION FORUM “CARRIES ON REGARDLESS”

An Editorial by J. Brock (FINN)

Ever wonder what’s more important than saving whales or preventing seabird deaths on long-line hooks?  It could be petty politics.  Consider the following minute from an environmental gathering.

Admission of observers: COP9 President Otafiire presented the list of registered observers (COP9 Doc. 31), stating this list would remain open as new observers are registering daily. ARGENTINA objected to registering the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum as UK-based, as this NGO relates to the Falkland/Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and rejected all references to these as UK territories. The UK reiterated its position on the sovereignty of the islands.

I hear it coming – “That was resolved 23 years ago, right? – wrong!

It seems that petty politics gets into everything, including some subjects where it is detrimental.  Fortunately the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum carries on regardless.

If I were an Albatross or a Whale, I’d have a few words for anyone with the mandate to protect – “Quit wasting time with the protocol of petty politics and get cracking on the real issues before the true calamity – the affects of global warming – really catch up with us.”

And me?  I think some people ought to grow up.

FALKLANDS ENERGY PRICES SOAR AS THE PRICE OF OIL FALLS

By J. Brock (FINN)

When the price of crude oil rose above $70.00 per barrel, energy prices in the Falklands almost immediately changed to reflect having to buy hydrocarbons products at higher prices.  That was on August 30th.   However the price of crude has dropped since then to a low today of $58.93 – some $11.07 lower than the August high.  Further to this, it is anticipated that the price of crude will lower to between $45.00 and $55.00 per barrel – a more manageable price.

Stock markets find the news encouraging – but not so for the major oil companies who are feeling the pinch.

People will be asking why their energy costs are not going down and the simple answer is that when stocks of hydrocarbons products were purchased the price was high and the cost was calculated in the energy bill to the individual customer.  It is possible for a reduction of energy costs here should hydrocarbons products be bought at a lower price – that is if the price of crude doesn’t rise while we are using up products bought at the higher price.  Islanders hope that isn’t the scenario.
