US PRESIDENT BUSH IN ARGENTINA FOR ECONOMIC SUMMIT
By J. Brock (FINN)
U. S. President, George W. Bush, has arrived in Mar del Plata, Argentina to attend a two-day conference about promoting prosperity in the Americas. La Prensa Austral says that a final Summit Declaration is causing problems and diplomats are trying to hammer out the wording of one of the sections about trade but are not making progress.
While at the summit President will answer criticism that he has ignored Latin America and will speak of prosperity through more free trade, private enterprise and efficient democracy. He will be facing one of his best critics, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who blames Latin American’s continued economic stagnation on the United States.
President Chavez has spoken to a large group of protestors who have come to Mar del Plata to voice their demands for a better economy.
During the visit, President Bush will meet privately with Argentine President Kirshner but it is thought Falklands sovereignty won’t be brought up and that it will be voiced to the whole conference.
