Promoting St Helena Stamps
The Post Office makes use of improved communications to promote St Helena stamps.
Sylvia Plato, Assistant Postmistress said that the main customers are overseas collectors, and many of these are contacting the Post Office via email. St Helena stamps are being promoted via the Post Office website www.postoffice.gov.sh where customers are able to place orders.
Commenting on the use of this new technology to publicise St Helena’s Stamps, Beverley Francis, Postmistress, said: " Our website provides the customer with immediate stamp information. Orders may be placed on-line with a choice of payment opportunities including payment by credit card. This allows orders to be processed and ready for despatch when the RMS departs, unlike before when all orders could only be received by ship or by fax."
This year, the Post Office released a stamp issue on Tourism, and will soon issue a set of stamps to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In July, a new definitive issue, ‘ Wild Flowers of St Helena’ will be released. Unlike other issues, a definitive remains on sale for five years. The current definitive issue depicts sailing ships that called at St Helena many years ago.
Sylvia said that the World Wildlife Fund issue, depicting the ‘Sperm Whale’ was quite a success, as was the issue on ‘Napoleon’s Earlier Years.’ She said that many overseas customers are looking for a particular interest, and quite a few have asked for stamps depicting plants or birds. She added that those bearing ships are also "a good seller" as well as stamps that bear pictures of things that are of global interest.
