Today’s news Provided by the Royal Falkland Islands Police reflects the fact that people are out hill walking around Stanley due to the good weather and they are finding unexploded ordinance.


 


At 1559 hrs on Monday, 17 October 2005, the Royal Falkland Islands Police received a report of a suspect device at Hooker’s Point.  The JSEOD were tasked to deal with it and the object was dealt with at 1634 hrs.


 


At 2017 on Monday, 17 October 2005, the JSEOD dealt with a 2 Inch Mortar at Cerritos, Goose Green.  The item was disarmed and brought to Stanley for disposal.


 


At 1953 on Tuesday, 18 October 2005, JSEOD reported a grenade at York Bay.  After the object was confirmed to be a grenade, it was dealt with at 1330.


 


At 1030 on Wednesday, 19 October 2005, the Royal Falkland Islands Police received a report of damage to the new culverts at Corral Creek by persons unknown who removed an excavator from the site.  There was damage to the roof of one culvert.


 


The Royal Falkland Islands Police would like to remind people who enjoy hiking that there is a correct procedure to follow when something dangerous is found. 


 


Mark It, Make a record of the Location, Report if to the Royal Falkland Islands Police.  DO NOT TOUCH THE SUSPECT ITEM.


 


At the moment, the Royal Falkland Islands Police are obtaining orange cards and small minefield maps so that walkers can mark and locate unexploded ordinance that they may find.


 


Another important note is that ordinance and pistols and the like are Crown Property and must be destroyed by the Royal Falkland Islands Police on behalf of the crown.  It is illegal to export such items out of the country and to possess the items.
