These objectives were selected from the 13 draft strategic objectives discussed at workshops earlier this year. The 13 objectives discussed were:

- Enhance links with Ascension (during process of change)
- Protect and conserve the environment

- Strengthen links with the mother country, Overseas Territories, the Commonwealth and internationally
- Promote and develop social policies to the benefit of society on St Helena

The objectives not selected will be taken into consideration when implementing the six selected objectives.
What happens next?
Now that the six objectives have been agreed, SHG is working towards producing a Strategy statement incorporating the objectives and the work that will underpin them. This document will play an important role when discussing the next three-year budgetary aid proposals with the Department for International Development as it will show what St Helena wants to achieve and how it intends to achieve it. The budgetary discussions are planned for autumn this year and will include details on how departments will contribute to achieving the Strategic Objectives.
