St Helena : Strategic Objectives: Where are we now?
Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Juanita Brock) 17.05.2003 (Article Archived on 31.05.2003)

St. Helena Government recently approved six strategic objectives.

Strategic Objectives

Where are we now?

The St Helena Government recently approved six strategic objectives for the Island. The objectives are as follows:

1. Improved Access

2. Improve the Standard of Education for the People of St Helena

3. Development of a Sustainable and Vibrant Economy to the Benefit of St Helena

4. Develop a Healthy Community in a Safe Environment

5. Promote and Develop a Sustainable Workforce

6. Continue to Develop and Establish the Democratic and Human Rights and Self-Determination of the People of St Helena

These objectives were selected from the 13 draft strategic objectives discussed at workshops earlier this year. The 13 objectives discussed were:

  1. Development of a sustainable and vibrant economy to the benefit of St Helena

  2. Improved access

  3. Improve the standard of education for the people of St Helena

  4. Promote and develop a sustainable workforce

  5. Develop a healthy community in a safe environment

  6. Develop and establish the democratic and human rights and self determination for the people of St Helena

  7. Enhance links with Ascension (during process of change)

  8. Protect and conserve the environment

  9. Care of the elderly

  10. Reduce all forms of local deprivation

  11. Strengthen links with the mother country, Overseas Territories, the Commonwealth and internationally

  12. Promote and develop social policies to the benefit of society on St Helena

  13. Protect and cherish the culture on St Helena

The objectives not selected will be taken into consideration when implementing the six selected objectives.

What happens next?

Now that the six objectives have been agreed, SHG is working towards producing a Strategy statement incorporating the objectives and the work that will underpin them. This document will play an important role when discussing the next three-year budgetary aid proposals with the Department for International Development as it will show what St Helena wants to achieve and how it intends to achieve it. The budgetary discussions are planned for autumn this year and will include details on how departments will contribute to achieving the Strategic Objectives.
