COMMITTEE NEWS

The up coming week will see four FIG Committee meetings as well as a public meeting. The public meeting, the last of this Council, will be held in the Infant/Junior School Hall at 1700 on Tuesday, 20 September 2005.
The Falkland Islands Training and Education Council will be meeting on Monday, 19 September 2005 at 1330 in the Liberation Room of the Secretariat. Some of the items to be discussed include applications for training grants, The Training Development Plan for 2005 – 2007, a Summary of Training Needs Analysis conducted in 2004, a Summary of Training Needs Analysis conducted in 2005 and the Training and the Museum Manager’s Report on Overseas Training.
The Historic Buildings Committee will meet at 1330 on Thursday, 22 September 2005 at the Archives Building on Jeremy Moore Ave. As yet no papers have been received for this Committee meeting.
Also with no papers are the meetings of the Standing Finance Committee and the Health and Medical Services Committee.
Minutes for the public section of the Housing Committee held on 07 September 2005 were issued, with the schedule of meetings for the remaining months of the year being discussed It is not known yet about the 02 November meeting when Council would have been dissolved. Also discussed was a Draft Revised Housing Application form and Guidance Notes, only tabled at this meeting. It will be considered in full at the next meeting.
That item being finished, the press and public were excluded from the rest of the meeting.
Minutes for the Environmental Committee meeting held on 07 September 2005 were also received, with the Murrell Road’s draft Management Plan being discussed, with three options being put forward, one being approved by Ex-Co and the public. Briefly, the options are: To continue with the management of the area as normal, to establish an informal policing code of practice and making the area a designated nature reserve.
Requests to shoot birds was discussed in detail with the committee thinking that such requests should be put to Ex-Co. They probably would like to see photos
An ACAP workshop will be held in the Falklands in March 2006 at which the Environmental Planning Officer will represent FIG. Falklands Conservation have been running the Albatross and Petrel programme at this workshop.
Kyoto was discussed with the Environmental Planning Officer reminding members that FIG had been approached previously to ratify the Protocol in principle. The benefit of ratifying this protocol in principle and becoming more active in reducing emissions would reduce the Falklands’ dependency on hydrocarbons.
Applications for research licences for Plovers and Rockhoppers were then discussed, with approval for the Plover research and a two-year research licence for the Rockhoppers. This was followed by a discussion about the Environmental Studies Budget.
The last discussion in the public segment of the meeting concerned a visit to Beauchene Island by Falklands Conservation. A three-member team would visit will carry out a 5 yearly census of Penguins and Albatross.
